The rules around ITIN renewals can be confusing. ITINs expire for a number of reasons – not just because they’ve been held for a set period of time; ITINs also expire through inactivity.

You may be required to obtain an ITIN if you wish to claim inheritance on US real estate; have business dealings in the US; you are the partner, spouse, or dependant of a US citizen but you are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).
